Global Defaults let you set the starting configuration for every new Gallery and Album you create. Instead of adjusting the same settings repeatedly on each new Gallery, you configure them once here and every new Gallery or Album inherits those values automatically.

Gallery defaults vs. Album defaults #
The Defaults tab has two sub-tabs: Gallery and Album. Gallery defaults apply to new Galleries; Album defaults apply to new Albums. The available settings are the same full set you see in the Gallery and Album editors respectively.
How defaults work #
When you create a new Gallery or Album, FotoGrids uses the values set here as its initial settings.
Changing the defaults does not retroactively affect existing Galleries or Albums — it only affects Galleries and Albums created after the change is saved.
If you change a setting on an individual Gallery or Album, that Gallery or Album is no longer following the default for that setting. Changes to the default will not override the per-Gallery value.
Configuring gallery defaults #
- Go to FotoGrids → Settings and click the Defaults tab.
- Ensure the Gallery sub-tab is selected.
- The full Gallery settings panel loads — the same interface as the Gallery editor. Work through each settings group (Layout, Lightbox, Captions, Image Effects, and so on) and set the values you want as your baseline.
- Click Save to apply.
All new Galleries created after saving will start with these settings.
Configuring album defaults #
- Go to FotoGrids → Settings → Defaults and click the Album sub-tab.
- Set your preferred defaults for Album display.
- Click Save to apply.
Common defaults to configure #
There is no required configuration — you can leave everything at its factory defaults. That said, some settings are worth reviewing before you start building:
- Layout — If you prefer Masonry or Justified over Grid, set that here.
- Lightbox — If you want the Lightbox off by default, or always want a thumbnail strip, set it here rather than toggling it on every Gallery.
- Columns — Adjust desktop/tablet/mobile column counts to match your theme’s content width.
- Item Spacing — Set a gap value that works with your design.
- Item Click Behaviour — If most of your Galleries should link items to an external URL rather than open the Lightbox, set that here to avoid changing it on every Gallery.
- Lazy Loading — Ensure lazy loading is enabled (it is by default) so images below the fold don’t slow down your initial page load.
- Statistics Tracking — If you don’t need per-Gallery view counts, you can disable tracking in the defaults to reduce database writes across all Galleries.
